Accessibility Statement

Last updated: 11 July 2025
Review due: July 2026

Merthyr Cynog Community Council is committed to making our website accessible to everyone, including people with disabilities. We aim to comply with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) Accessibility Regulations 2018 and the Equality Act 2010.

How accessible this website is

We aim to make our website easy to use and understand by everyone. That includes people who:

  • Use screen readers or magnifying tools

  • Navigate by keyboard instead of a mouse

  • Need clear headings, good contrast, and readable fonts

  • Use speech recognition or other assistive technologies

We follow the WCAG 2.2 Level AA accessibility standards, which are recognised guidelines for making websites more accessible.

What we're doing to improve accessibility

We use Squarespace 7.1, which includes helpful built-in features:

  • Keyboard navigation – you can move through the site using just your keyboard

  • Visible focus – it’s easy to see which link or button is selected as you navigate

  • Zoom support – you can zoom in up to 400% without the content breaking

  • Colour contrast – we check text and background colours for visibility

  • Alt text – we add descriptions to images so screen readers can describe them

  • Captions and transcripts – for videos and audio, where provided

  • Forms and links – we label these clearly to make them easy to understand

We also use what’s called accessible semantic structure. This simply means:

  • We use clear headings to organise pages logically, making it easier to scan or jump to sections.

  • The website follows a standard structure that screen readers understand.

  • We include landmarks (also known as ARIA landmarks) to help people using assistive tech find things like menus, content, and footers easily.

Known issues

We are aware that some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

  • Some third-party features (like embedded maps or videos) may not work well with assistive technology.

  • Form labels in Squarespace may appear in capital letters, which screen readers can sometimes misread.

  • Older content may occasionally have missing alt text or contrast issues.

We will work to fix these problems over time and welcome your feedback.
